Good Afternoon Parents,
Long time no chat! Here is your update for Grade 6 and 7 in Room 1094.
We are well underway in multiplying and dividing decimals. Our student teacher Mr. An has been going over the review of long division and we will be going in depth in decimals next week. Expect a check-in sometime then. From our observations, the class has a strong hold of the material and we are excited to see how far they can go.
As a teacher, I never thought I’d be happy to let students throw paper airplanes in the classroom, but this project has been a blast. We are currently in our Flight unit and are testing the effects of different paper airplanes and their motion. We will be testing the planes Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are reminding the students that the MOST IMPORTANT part of this project is their journal. We are hoping they follow through with their write ups.
Graphing, angles and line segments! We are in the beginning stages of our unit and I have told the students that they will need a compass or better yet, a geometry set. If the students could please bring one next week, it will help as we get deeper into the unit.
Drumheller and the Royal Tyrell Museum was an amazing day. Much thanks again to all the volunteers who made the day possible. With the field trip, we are almost done our unit. We are planning to finish and have our unit test on Wednesday the 11th.If all goes to plan, we will have it then. It is recommended the students start reviewing now so all material is known.
Thanks for your continued support,
Good Morning Parents and Guardians,
If you can believe it, we are into Term 2! The year is flying by and we are having a blast here in Grade 6 and 7. Here are your updates:
- If you have any questions about the report card, please feel free to contact me at anytime
- Starting February 18th, we will have a student teacher joining our class for 8 weeks for his 4thpracticum experience. We welcome Mr. An to our great community.
Math àWe are almost finished our Decimals, Percents, Fractions and Ratios unit. We will be having a quick Check In this Friday the 7Th. This will just be done to see where the students are at. Students are grasping great Mental Math skills in this unit and we have been able to introduce some higher level thinking due to the class’ resiliency and determination.
Science àAir and Aerodynamics is well under way. We introduced a Research Project this week that is due Wednesday the 12th.I am making this a hard deadlinefor the student to instill the sense of time management and work ethic. Please see Google Drive for the assignment sheet. Students will have today, Monday and Tuesday for class time to do what they can and are welcomed to take home any necessary work.
As well, we have a field trip coming up in the end of February to the Hanger Museum. The 24thto be exact. Forms will be going out Monday. Please pay and return the forms at the earliest convenience.
Math àDecimals, decimals and more decimals. This unit is a big one, starting back in December. I was hoping to have our Unit Test next week, but I will play this by ear. I want to ensure that when assessed, the students have the best opportunity to succeed. I have sent home some practice sheets with each student. So, if they need extra practice, it is there for them.
Science àPlanet Earth has introduced some awesome new learning experiences. Today and tomorrow are our presentations for our Natural Disasters Projectand I couldn’t be more excited by the modes I see in the classroom. Next week, we will be having a Topic 1-3 Quiz, which relates everything we have done so far in the unit
Have a great week,
Welcome Back Parents of 6-7 and 7-7,
Other than losing my voice from all the talking, it has been an awesome week back. January is a whirlwind of a month for students and teachers alike so here is your check-in to keep you in the know:
We are coming to a close in our Probabilityunit in math and will be having our final Check-In QuizFriday, January 17th. We will be spending the week finishing up our lessons on Fractions to Decimals and also reviewing what we did in December. Once we finish this unit, we will be heading into Fractions, Decimals and Percentagesstarting Monday the 20th. As for Science, Air and Aerodynamicsis well under way and we are currently completing our Key Topics Labs to introduce the unit. BIG CONGRATS TO 6-7 COMING IN 2NDPLACE IN THE 1STANNUAL RAPTOR RALLY AIR CAR DERBY!
Structure and Forcesis finally over and we will be moving on to our next unit Planet Earthstarting Monday. Structuresis always a tough unit, as we saw our class average on the unit test drop a tough lower in comparison to our first exam. But as I mentioned to the kids, we did some large projects and will have other opportunities to show our knowledge in the upcoming months. One bad test will not dictate the grade for the rest of the term. Grades for the unit test will be up on PowerSchool next week.
In math, we are in the middle of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and will continue with the unit for the next few weeks.
Thanks for the continued support! Have a great weekend.
Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians,
Believe it or not, 2020 is here and did it ever come quickly! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday break filled with friends, family, food and rest. Personally, I am looking forward to the new year and all the new possibilities it will bring.
I just wanted to give you a quick and hopefully uncomplicated view of our report cards coming out at the end of January. As mentioned at the beginning of the year, our Math Stems changed in September and it has been a leaning curve for both the students and teachers involved. Instead of the previous Understanding, Communication, Problem Solving, Strategies and Mental Mathstems, our assessment has been directed towards the math sections. Our new stems are Number Sense, Patterns and Relations, Shapes and Space and Probability and Statistics.Unfortunately, these changes were delivered at the end of September after we as a Math team set the order of how the units would be taught. Therefore, there will be new indicator that will appear on the report cards. NATR (Not Applicable This Report) will show up if we have yet to assess on that stem. Purely by coincidence, 7-7 we have 2 of these indicators (in Shape and Space and Patterns and Relations) and 6-7 we have 1 (in Shape and Space). For example, you may see your son or daughter’s report looking roughly like this (comment excluded):
Billy’s Term 1 Report Card for Math
Number Sense Patterns and Relations Shape and Space Probability and Statistics
4 NATR NATR 3
This is due to the order of our curriculum and therefore will be assessed before the June report card. Our Science Stems were unaffected, so they will look like last year’s assessments. I apologize if this email was confusing but if you still have questions, feel free to email me anytime and I will do my best to clarify your thoughts.
Here’s to wishing you a happy last weekend before work and school starts up.
Hey team 6-7 and 7-7,
We are only 2 weeks away until Winter Break! Crazy to think how fast this has all gone. Here is where we are as we head into the light at the end of the tunnel:
We just finished Evidence and Investigation and the class did amazing on the unit test. A class average of 72% is a dream come true. Marks will be up on Powerschool shortly. We will be starting Air and Flight Monday and starting an awesome end of the month project in that unit. As for math, we are well underway in Probability and should be done by the break. There will be a check in this Wednesday the 11th to ensure our success.
The Algebra unit is close to being over. However, we will be seeing it embedded for the rest of the year, so let's prepare our students for that reality. We are breezing through the unit of Fractions and should finish it by the Holidays. In Science, we are starting our final unit project for Structures and Forces. Our last project was not done well collectively. Of course, we had some students excel, but others did not reach their potential. Ask your student about how they did and what their next steps are to find success. This next project will be a clean slate and give the opportunity to show their knowledge a second time.
Thanks for all you do,
Good Afternoon 6-7 and 7-7 Crew

Have a Fantastic Week Everyone,
Good Afternoon Everyone,
Halloween is over and the sugar rush is finally wearing off. Here is what has been and what will be happening in Room 1094.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are fast approaching! They are Thursday the 21st (4pm-8pm), Friday the 22nd (8am-1pm) and Monday the 25th (10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm). Bookings should be opening today if not, Monday, and if you are having any struggles in finding or booking a conference, please contact the front office and they can assist you.
PowerSchool is currently updated as well, so please check to see how your young one is doing. Contact me if needed!
We are deep into our Numbers unit in Math and students are being challenged with our now daily Super Question. This question ties together many topics of our Numbers unit and so far the kids are loving the challenge. For the students who are still struggling with the 12x12 multiplication table and material from previous years like division and 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, please ensure they are working on that at home. If they need extra practice sheets, have them come and see me or Google the appropriate material. We are hoping to have a Numbers Check-in on all we have done so far (Place Value, Rounding, Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing) late next week. In Science, we are currently working out our detective brains with labs on Evidence and Investigation. Our first lab had a few hiccups with the students doing as they were told. It is vital for their safety and learning that they listen and follow my instructions. Otherwise I may have to find another avenue to teach these topics. We are hoping by the end of the unit we can try and solve a massive lab with all techniques discovered.
We have begun the most important unit in Math of the year, Algebra. This unit will be integrated with math and science for the rest of their educational career, so it is vital that they build a fantastic foundation now! We have been playing math games and solving riddles all to do with Algebra this week and are hoping to have a Check-in mid next week. I am instilling into the student that this is the unit to put 110% effort into in order to succeed for years to come. In Science, Structures and Forces is well underway and we have already built 1 meter tall towers out of 50cm of tape and one single piece of white paper, as well as a bridge out of 32 toothpicks and 6 jube-jube candies that could withstand the weight of 30+ marbles. We will be continuing with notes and assignments next week.
Thanks for the continued support! Have a great long weekend.
Hey there Parents and Guardians,
It has been another whirlwind of awesome here the past 2-3 weeks at West Ridge. Let me update you where we are at.
I have updated Powerschool for every assessment handed in so far. PLEASE CHECK IT TO SEE WHAT IS MISSING FROM YOUR CHILD. I pulled each student aside individually this week and updated them with what is missing and we've have set a deadline for October 31st for when the late material is due. Now of course, this deadline is fluid but I am trying to teach our young adults the importance of being on time with their work. Please contact me ASAP with any concerns you may see. All material is on Google Drive, and each student should be able to find their assignments there.
We just finished up both Sky Science and Patterns and Algebra. Now we are moving into Evidence and Investigation in Science and Number Systems in Math. I urge all students to see this change in one of two ways. If the last units went spectacularly, continue to work hard, achieve your goals and challenge yourself on higher learning. If the last units were a struggle, see this as an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin to focus and work towards their potential. Most of the issues I am noticing when it comes to misunderstanding the curriculum is coming from students still building their resiliency. Therefore, let's take this time to hit restart on the the previous units and come in strong on the next.
As well, our field trip is this Thursday (October 31st). Please ensure the permission forms are in by Monday the 28th. The letter sent home will describe what is needed for the day and feel free to contact me with any questions.
Interactions and Ecosystems is over! I am currently marking the tests and I am seeing great results. I will have those back to the students by Tuesday, so if you ask and they say they haven't gotten back their results, show them this and check Powerschool. We will start Structures and Forces Monday. As for math, we are flying through Divisibility and should be able to have our Unit Quiz by the end of next week or the start of the following week.
Thanks again for your continued support and feel free to contact me with any question, comment or concern you may have. Have a great weekend and spooky Halloween.
-- Joel Pendergast
Hey there 6-7,
There have been issues with the Homework folder on Google Drive. Therefore, I have created a new folder titled "West Ridge Pendergast 2019/20 Year". In there you will find a file named "6-7" and then all notes and homework is there! Thanks for being patient and please let me know if you still have issues.
Happy Long Weekend,
Hey 6-7 Crew,
My apologies, but I forgot to mention a few other dates.
--> Science (Sky Science) Unit Test – Monday Oct 21 – Period 2 – Day 1
--> Math Test (Patterns and Algebra) Part A – Tuesday Oct 15 – Period 5 – Day 2
--> Math Test (Patterns and Algebra) Part B – Thursday Oct 17 – Period 5 – Day 2
Thanks for the support,
Good Afternoon you awesome parents of 6-7 and 7-7,
It has been a while since I checked in so here is my update:
It has been an incredible 2 weeks! From field trip to projects to learning new things (Some things as high as grade 8 level in math!!), we have been all across the Math/Science World. We are starting a great Science Inquiry project next week. Please remind our students to brainstorm ideas about Space, any topic that interests them. That project will be due October 18th. As well, our Sky Science Unit Test is October 21st.We have been working hard on preparing and the students know where to find their study guide. On that note, Google Drive is being slightly awkward for some students. The file is shared but it cannot be seen. If you search "Grade 6 Homework" in your student's Drive, it should come up. If it doesn't, please let me know.
In Math, we have our second Check-In for Algebra this Wednesday. Our little Einstein’s have been reaching some grade 7 and 8 level work. It is such a blast to see! I have mentioned many times to the kids that ALGEBRA IS THE MOST IMPORTANT UNIT OF THE YEAR! This is because it will be seen every year from now on.
The office has asked me to mention that there are still many outstanding fees from our Rothney Trip. Please check the myCBE to verify your payment.
The Zoo Field trip is fast approaching. Forms have been sent out and you can pay on myCBE. If you are able to volunteer, please email me as soon as you can. We are close to being finished this Ecosystemsunit, and the Unit Test date will be announced soon.
As for Math, we are also very close to being complete in the Integers unit. Unit Test will be Thursday this week. I am very confident in saying the students will rock this test. If they need extra work, have them come chat with me.
Thanks for the great start to this year! I cannot wait to see where it goes.
Good Afternoon 7-7,
First off, I want to thank everyone for an incredible start to the school year. It has been a blast for staff and students alike. Here is the update of what is going on so far:
We are going through the unit of "Mean, Median, Mode and Range", and we have started a project that the kids are loving! It is due Sept. 17th, and I cannot wait to se what they put together. We completed the MIPI this week, and on the whole, 7-7 did really well. Students will be receiving the results next week.
Interactions and Ecosystems is off to a great start and we are starting off with a small research project. It is also due Sept. 17th, but from what I have noticed, most students are well on their way.
It has been a great start to the year and I know it will continue throughout.
Good Afternoon Parents,
What an incredible start to our new year. You can feel the excitement in the hallways here at West Ridge. It was a pleasure meeting you on Meet the Teacher night. It is always nice to put a face with the name. We are 2 weeks into the school year, and here are your updates for 6-6 Math and Science:
We are deep into our unit of Patterns and Relations. Our first Homework assignment is due Sept. 19th and we will also be having a check in on that date. As well, the MIPI test (which is a mental math checkpoint) will be happening the week of the 23rd. I mentioned to the students that we have ordered a class et of calculators, so there is no need for them to bring their own. They are welcome to, as some students have, but they will be provided.
Our Sky Science unit is well on it's way. Each student should be completing their Moon Journal Nightly by observing the phases of the moon. We've also been hard at work on our "Phases of the Moon" project that is due Sept. 19th. Here is the criteria the students were presented with:
I am thrilled to see what they come up with.
That's all for now! Here's to a great year,
