Welcome back to school to our new grade 4 students and their families!
This week was all about settling back into our routines and getting accustomed to being the "big kids" and role models of Citadel Park School. This included reviewing our three pillars of care (take care of yourself, take care of others, take care of this place) and creating a classroom contract or guide of best practices for encouraging successful learning and behaviour.
We spent time creating our visual journal covers which include our Minecraft selfie pictures and the question, who am I? This is going to be our focus question this year which will be answered in part through all our learning. We will be looking at what influences the person we were, are and will become, from friendships to cultural and historical experiences.
Our first field trip of the year came quickly, for sure, with a visit to the Glenbow Museum on Thursday. We were fortunate to have had the chance to learn about the First Nations of Alberta, with a lesson on the Blackfoot Nation language and traditions, as well as an opportunity to discover the beautiful paintings/drawings of Alex Janvier, an artist from the Cold Lake First Nations. We practiced the skills of mindful observation, by taking the time to look carefully at the art and describe the colours, shapes, and movement of the piece, as well as what we thought was being communicated. We had a great experience, one that we will be revisited again in our studies this year.
"Art truly is a universal language that can communicate any idea, any feeling, of anyone, regardless of their social standing, their religious beliefs or the language they speak." - Alex Janvier
