This week in our learning:
-We have started a new read aloud book, the second of the Judy Blume series about the Hatcher family. Peter Hatcher is the same age as we are, so we enjoy hearing the everyday life experiences he has.
-We talked about three "brain pockets" that are used for creative writing. These include the memory pocket, the fact pocket, and the imagination pocket. For strong narrative writing, it is important to pull information from each pocket. Ask me to share some of my examples from my "brain pockets".
-We've discovered three types of narrative writing, which was surprising, as we've always thought there was only one format. There is the climbing story, which is the most commonly used one that includes characters, setting, problem and solution, but there are also the walking story and poems. We are going to explore writing both walking stories and poems in the future.
-This week we completed a math assessment that will be used to give the teachers an idea of where we are in our mathematical understanding and what area may require more focused attention. The data will be used to guide teaching practices and the direction of mathematics instruction.
-We did some further work on patterns with an activity using snap cubes and decreasing number patterns. Four students were challenged with linking 21 snap cubes and then choosing to remove 1, 2, or 3 cubes each turn. The goal was to avoid being the last to completely break down the snap cubes tower. We took this challenge further by changing the number options to 2, 3, or 4 cubes. The catch was that you could not be left with a single cube or else you would be out of the race. We hope to be able to try another variation of this game.
-We learned about equations, what they mean, and how to solve for an unknown number. After some practice, we took part in a fun activity where we had to create equations using only pattern blocks (that we'd given a secret value to ) and a total. Each shape had to have the same value for each equation we made. We went around the class trying to solve the mystery equations that our classmates created. Ask me to share with you the equations that I made.

-We continued with our conversation about waste and it's impact on the Earth. We read about and discussed the 4 "Rs" to help minimize the impact that trash has on our environment. They are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair. We read an article and practiced highlighting key information from the text. We then worked in groups to come up with ways to reuse common household garbage, such as; baby food jars, plastic bottles, newspaper, aluminium cans, and paper grocery bags.
-We are very proud of the way our grade 4 Orange Shirt Day assembly went this Monday.
-We continued to complete our "A, B, Cs of Alberta". For example, B is going to represent the Blackfoot Nations, C will represent Chinooks, and D will be for Drumheller. We will complete our Alberta alphabet next week.
We have been practicing expressing how we feel each day by answering in French for the attendance. Ms. Marshall asks "Comment ça va __________?" and we answer with "Ça va _____________" using either très bien, bien, comme çi/comme ça, or mal". We also continue to practice asking to use the washroom and also welcoming and thanking others.
-Read at least 30 minutes daily
-We have started a new reading program this year, where we will track our home reading and receive animal themed cards for each 100 minutes we've read. The first few students to gather all 24 cards will get a chance to pick from the treasure chest. Please remember that a parent signature is required to receive a card. Happy Reading!
-Fun Lunch is on October 18th
-Book orders are due by October 26th
-The construction on the community centre has begun and the gravel parking area has been blocked off. The teacher parking area is still unavailable for non-staff members during this time. Please keep that in mind for pick up and drop off for the duration of the construction.
-No school on Monday for Thanksgiving holiday
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend!
