We are working with a variety of materials in Science this week. We are learning and exploring the properties of materials and their purpose. Some of the properties include: strength, flexibility, absorbency and more. Any chance you can highlight these at home with everyday items would be great. The big idea is that the materials have a property that serves a purpose.
With the election and voting in our gym, we were able to begin our discussion about leaders and leadership. In the gym, we were able to journal about the voting using an I see, I think, I wonder format. I challenged students to write about what qualities they felt were important in a leader. I would like to further challenge them to think about how they are/can be leaders in different ways. During our initial brainstorm, they identified that there were different kinds of leaders and that they had different jobs. We have completed our beginning understanding into rights and responsibilities and ended with a discussion on how rights make us feel safe, healthy, and happy. We will take this message into our Quality of Life work that we are beginning in Social Studies. Here we will begin discussing how quality of life makes us feel safe, healthy, and happy. We will be talking about our family, our celebrations and traditions, and special places that contribute to our quality of life. Then we will learn about these areas within the four countries of study (Peru, India, Ukraine, and Tunisia).
We are in the process of completing self- portraits this week. We have been exploring some sketching techniques in our sketch books and are completing a self-portrait to display. We"published" our special someone paragraphs and these will be on display with our self-portraits.
Roald Dahl has been inspiring us with his amazing vocabulary and this week we began reading Peter Brown's The Wild Robot. Another great author with the ability to use a variety of techniques that allow readers to visualize the story
We have been working on some initial coding work with Hour of Code tutorials and we continue to develop our typing skills using, typingclub.com. These skills will help us with our future robotics and story writing projects.
With math, students are working on patterns. They are identifying and creating repeating, increasing, and decreasing patterns. This is done in a variety of ways using color, shape, numbers, and more.
A note about Halloween next week: HALLOWEEN HOWLER: classes will be invited to join us in the learning commons for some Halloween musical literacy. Following that, students will transition into the gymnasium area to participate in a variety of themed PE activity stations.
