Language Arts: This week we focused on Remembrance Day. We talked about why we have Remembrance Day but also focused on Peace. We read books about what Peace feels like and what Peace is to us. Students together made a beautiful wreath for the Remembrance Day Assembly. As well, they created a peace sign in their visual journals and wrote what peace means to them. Spelling went well this week. We learned about 2 word families: the “at” family and the “it” family. Students discovered how many words they could write just by knowing these 2 family words. Perhaps they can show you on the week end. We ended our week by reading a Remembrance Day Poem and learning how to draw poppies.
Math: We finished our counting books this week. We also did some pattern review this week. Students were given a problem and had to make up a pattern, show the core, show how they could translate the pattern into another form and extend their pattern. Next week we will begin to work on showing the numbers 1-20 in different ways.
Science: This week we learned what happens when white is added to the colours blue and red. We also read several colour books. The one thing that I noticed especially this week, is students are getting really good at looking at different colours (I have a Pantone Book with many different variations of each colour in it) and thinking about how that colour might have been created. Students are guessing that white, black, sometimes brown and other colours have been added to a particular primary colour to create a variation of that primary colour.
Your child received a gift of a book today. This book is theirs to keep. This is the TD Grade One Book Giveaway and I am inserting what was sent to me for you to read:
“Each book is a gift to your Grade One student and is meant to be taken home by them to read with a parent or guardian. The goal is to help all Canadian children to develop a love of reading and a passion for books and what better way than with the gift of a wonderful Canadian picture book!”
